What Should We Do Before and After Eid Fitri?
Eid al-Fitr is a very memorable moment that is awaited by all Muslims around the world, the day when Muslims return to fitri which means returning to purity after fasting Ramadan for 30 days, in order to improve themselves and increase devotion to Allah, then continued with the implementation of Eid prayers. Most people are busy preparing for the arrival of Eid al-Fitr such as new clothes and food and preparing for the arrival of guests, all preparations are very good, but some of us as Muslims forget to prepare ourselves about what we should do before Eid al-Fitr and after Eid al-Fitr so that the rewards we get are perfect in the sight of Allah. For that, let’s look at the following explanation.

What is Eid Fitri?
In the “Al-Munawwir Arabic-Indonesian” dictionary, al fith-ru (الفطر) kashru ash-shawmi, which means breaking the fast. In Arabic it is called futhur. So idul fitri (عيدالفطر) means the holiday of breaking the fast or eating. From this description it can be concluded that the definition of Eid al-Fitr is a holiday where Muslims are obliged to break their fast or eat.
The explanation described by M.Quraish Shihab in the insight of the Qur’an – Tafsir Maudhu’i which explains various problems of Muslims. The word fithr means true religion or purity. This explanation leads us to the conclusion that Eid al-Fitr means our return to a state of purity or freedom from sin so that it is in a state of purity (fitrah).

Both of these meanings are equally good because after we have fasted for 30 days, of course, we also clean and improve ourselves both spiritually to increase devotion and physical organs to become healthier. With the arrival of Eid al-Fitr time, we implement what we have learned during Ramadan to eat in moderation, control ourselves and perfect our practices by feeding each other so that we return spiritually clean and pure.

What Is The Ruling On Praying Eid Al-Fitr?
“The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us during the Eid prayer (Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha) to bring out girls and women in seclusion, as well as women who are menstruating. But he ordered the menstruating women to stay away from the place of prayer.” (Hadith Narrated by Muslim)
This hadith explains that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ordered all Muslims to go out to pray Eid al-Fitr if they have no excuse. This hadith also explains that leaving the house is a means to the prayer, and the means is obligatory, so of course the prayer is also obligatory.

What Are The Practices Before & After Eid Prayer?
- Paying Zakat Fitri
Zakat fitri is a zakat that is issued in the form of staple foods that must be issued by all capable Muslims to the poor with a predetermined amount. Zakat fitri is paid before the implementation of Eid prayer on the 28th day or maximum before the implementation of Eid prayer.
‘Abdullāh ibn Ahmad ibn Bashir ibn Dzakwan and Ahmad ibn Al Azhar both said; ‘Abdullāh ibn Ahmad ibn Bashir ibn Dzakwan and Ahmad ibn Al Azhar both said; ‘Abdullāh ibn Marwan ibn Muhammad said; ‘Abdullāh al-Khaulani ibn Sayyar ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman Ash Shadafi ibn Ikrimah ibn Ibn ‘Abbās said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr, as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and profanity, and as a provision for the poor. If a person gives it before the Eid prayer, his zakaah is accepted, and if a person gives it after the prayer, then it is a form of charity.” (Hadith Narrated by Ibnu Majah 1817)
- Taking a bath before going to Eid prayer
The hadith narrated by Malik in the book of Muwattha, says that “Abdullah bin Umar took a bath on the day of Eid before going to the musholla (field where the Eid prayer is held)” (Hadith Narrated by Malik in our al-Muwattha).
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar was a famous hadith narrator and was also the son of the caliph ‘Umar ibn Khatab, a companion of the prophet who always followed the behavior of the prophet at that time.
- Before Eid prayer, we can wear our best clothes and decorate.
Wearing the best clothes we have does not have to buy new clothes, just clothes that are decent and clean, adorned in moderation and not excessive based on the hadith narrated by Ja’far bin Muhammad from his father: said that “That the Prophet (peace be upon him) wore the best clothes every Eid” (Hadith Narrated by Ahmad).

- Eating a light meal before going to Eid prayer
Before going to Eid prayer, it is recommended to eat something beforehand, such as eating an odd number of dates. This is found in the following hadith:
Jubarah Ibn Mughallas reported that Husayim reported that Ubaidullah ibn Abu Bakr reported that Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not go out to pray until he had eaten a few dates.” (Hadith Narrated by Ibn Majah 1744)
- Takbir on the day of Eid al-Fitr
Takbir is performed from the time the night of 1 Shawwal begins, until the morning of the Eid prayer. The evidence related to the Sunnah of takbeer
“That you may complete the number and glorify Allah for His guidance given to you, that you may be grateful.” (Al-Baqarah: 185)
“Ibn Umar (radhiyAllahu anhuma) reported that he used to say Takbir on the day of Eid (Iedul Fithri) until he arrived at the musholla (Eid field) and said Takbir until the Imam came (the Eid prayer will be held) (H.R al- Firyaabi in Ahkaamul Ied no 43)”
The words that saying are :
Takbir is recited three times as explained by Imam An-Nawawi in Kitab Al-Majmu’, Syarhul Muhadzdzab.
It means, “Allah is great, Allah is great, Allah is great.”
In addition to these dhikr, one can also add other dhikr, such as the dhikr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on Mount Shafa as narrated by Imam Muslim:
- Take different paths between leaving and returning from the mosque after the Eid prayer. Many of us as Muslims miss this sunnah, because we are too rushed to get ready to welcome guests, so now that we know it is good to follow. as for the hadith that underlies this explanation, namely:
“From Jabir bin Abdillah radhiyAllahu anhuma he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on the day of Eid took different paths (to and from his house)” (Hadith Narrated by al-Bukhari).
- Congratulate each other
Congratulating each other can be done as Muslims to other Muslims to celebrate our success in fasting and can pray for each other for goodness after Ramadan.
